Strongher and Weert Cycling Club Clinic at the Boels Ladies Tour
It’s never too late or too early to learn. Especially if what you are learning will make you better at doing what you love. This is the reason why 75 women got together in Weert, The Netherlands on September 1st.
In a partnership with the UCI Women’s WorldTour Boels Ladies Tour, Strongher and the Weert Cycling Club hosted for the first time a cycling clinic for women of different levels and abilities.
While the pros were racing in the surrounding roads, three groups of beginner and intermediate riders set off in the course that would make for a spectacular finish of the pro race hours later, won by German Lisa Brennauer. The participants were also led by professional riders Veerle Goossens, Sanne van Passen and Jeroen Meijers.
In the program, they covered a range of skills: riding corners, exercises with speeding and breaking, riding in a peloton and for the more keen and experienced, sprinting!
If you have participated in an all women’s cycling activity, be it a group ride, a training session or a race, you will know that it creates a different, almost magic dynamics. Women’s groups encourage rather than intimidate. We are pushed to believe that “If she can do it, I can do it too!”. It’s not about excluding the guys, but rather creating an environment that every woman, every girl, feels included and capable of doing her best and achieving something.
Before jumping on bikes, we covered some theory about activating drinks, recovery drinks and nutrients. Position on the bike and training with power-measuring instruments was also part of the topics. Then it was time for action and the riders were out in the course for about two hours, ending the session just before the BOELS LADIES TOUR poured into the streets of Weert fast and furious.
The participants of the clinic were then invited to join the VIP-terrace where they watched the final of the BLT2017 in company of Sheroes Marijn de Vries and Nynke de Jong. They received goodie bags as a souvenir of their participation.
According to pro cyclo-cross racer Veerle Goossens, one of the women who led the clinic, this was one of the most fun she’s ever had on the bike. “The atmosphere was incredible, and we made a point at the start to create an environment where your level didn’t matter. We were all women, and we were all there to learn from each other and share a good moment.” Her opinion on how the fun and the learning came nicely together was echoed by many of the participants. Veerle also added: “Women are often stronger and more experienced than they believe. It was great to see them taking corners with confidence and sprinting against each other with a big smile towards the end of the session”
A big thank you to organisers Serge van den Berg, Miranda Heijmans, the Boels Ladies Tour and riders Veerle Goossens, Sanne van Passen and Jeroen Meijers. See you again in 2018!
We love cycling. We love the natural high it brings us. It makes us feel good. It makes us feel confident. It makes us feel #Strongher. We want every woman to share and enjoy these feelings with us. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a pro, we dream of giving you a stage to show yourself. Let's create that stage together! Join our dream and live out your own!
